Sting and the Society for Creative Anachronism

I think just about everybody who watched the Oscars was wondering what the hell Sting was holding during the performance of You Will Be My Ain True Love. It turns out that it's a medieval instrument called a Hurdy-Gurdy (viella a roue or wheel-fiddle in French). It was used because it can produce continuous notes like a bagpipe, unlike a regular fiddle.
