%xhtml-lat1; %xhtml-special; %xhtml-symbol; --> ]> InstaContent http://instacontent.blogspot.com/ The word on the street is that blogs are the new push, so this site was created to push links rather than jerry-rig some communication protocol to the task. It is updated sporadically as content is unearthed. I also like to experiment with leading-edge web standards, so please let me know if they are not degrading gracefully. "If the Baby Boomer[s] Really Cared About This Country…They Would Collectively Start Smoking" 6/13/2005 01:47:00 p.m. http://ezraklein.typepad.com/blog/health_of_nations/
Mainstream Canadian media outlets are giving really bad coverage to other health care systems in light of the recent ruling by The Supremes. This American blogger does better at summarising other systems. However, our media has seemed to recognise that Sweden's minimum potential years of life lost is unappreciated by the OECD and we should be looking at it as closely as France.

I'm sure this kind of stuff is all over the Net, but I happened on this in particular. Some Slashdot post started me out on this review of Attack of the Clones (which is plenty applicable to Revenge of the Sith, obviously) and I've been browsing the archives from there. The articles range from the high-brow humorous to only-half-serious pretentious.
"Supermajority Requirements Don't Retard Mistakes, Just Change" 5/18/2005 12:56:00 p.m. http://www.elections.bc.ca/elections/ge2005/refresults.htm
It's looking like the BC-STV referendum isn't quite going to pass the super-majority hurdle, although (as of writing) it's first-past-the-post in every riding. This will be leaving everyone wondering where to go from here, although with a more sane-looking Legislature, the push for reform has probably lost a lot of its support. At the very least, the Yes campaign can take solace that the province's kids aren't as dumb as their parents.
"Dispatched by the Liberals as a Sugar-and-Spice Hammer Against the Advancement of [the] Conservative Party" 5/17/2005 12:49:00 p.m. http://www.canadafreepress.com/2005/cover051705a.htm

On the last day of a super-boring provincial election campaign, we get this. I'm excited enough, I'm actually going to give some commentary:

If she ever wanted leadership of the Tories, she would have gone, at most, independent. So either she believes the Liberals are truly the best party to be running the country or she thinks she has a serious shot at party leader. Let's assume for a moment that her goal is power; it seems unthinkable to those outside the Tories that her and Peter would be unable to win her the Conservative leadership, so either she's more skeptical about her ability to win than I am, or she thinks the Tories will never form the government, even with her in charge. But if she's doing this for conscience, then either she is as obsessed with getting stuff done as Jack, or she came to the decision that Stephen's Tories are evil.

Regardless of her reason, I think this gutsy, white-knight move puts her as close to Liberal leader as any other potential candidate, especially as Paul failed to deliver on expectations of a Tory-busting lean to the Right. Or maybe all she ever wanted to be was a cabinet minister? It's very curious.

Maybe it's a programmer thing (although that wouldn't explain why this is from BoingBoing, right?), but this is (probably embarassingly) my kind of puzzle:

  • Involves applying a relatively simple algorithm
  • Benefits from some external memory but not a comprehensive storage solution
  • Doesn't require a lot of unverifiable intuitive leaps
  • Can be brute-forced near the end
  • Solvable over lunch

And just so you know I'm wonderful, a solution is: dadbeddedabadbadbabe.

Why I Wouldn't Vote Green for the Long Now 4/25/2005 11:03:00 p.m. http://www.technologyreview.com/articles/05/05/issue/feature_earth.asp
You've certainly heard some of these environmental heresies before, especially if you hang out with me (not that I'm gloating or anything), but it's nice to have someone so prestigious link all the contrarian causes together.

This blog is so important to the librarians at RoyalRoads that they have it on their community's front page in the university's portal. It gives me the impression that the librarians of the future will be nothing more than Google power users — but don't tell them I said that.
The (Ω-1)th Pope 4/19/2005 01:32:00 p.m. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prophecy_of_the_Popes
Popeapalooza is over and I'm guessing the National Catholic Reporter lost money. Just in case you were wondering, Joe Ratz chose Benedict as his nom de pape to retcon St Malachy's prophecies, just as the Church has done in one way or another with all the previous Popes.
Popeapalooza 4/11/2005 01:08:00 p.m. http://www.nationalcatholicreporter.org/update/conclave/top_candidates.htm
Although we don't yet know how CNN will cover the Conclave to appoint the Nth Pope (where N ranges from 265 to 309), fringe American media have already covered the candidates. And of course if you have insider info, you can always put money on it.
