The most compelling part of the Green Party's recent platform are their proposals on taxing environmental externalities, but it seems to me that we should strive to tax social externalities as well. This article arguing in favour of taxation of advertising is apparently picking up on the zeitgeist, at least in the US. Although there are already restrictions on advertising, particularly for children, I think such taxation would please many citizens and perhaps even business people would accept it if it was progressive and creative restrictions were relaxed.
