I've been reading the soft cyberpunk book Everyone in silico and one of the issues it speculates on is body modifications. I started looking around on the Net to find out how close the body mod subculture was to implementing some of Munroe's ideas. Unfortunately, I was dismayed to discover that most of their advancement consists of sticking the same old things in freakier places. It was then that I realised that the subculture has no way of funding R&D by medical researchers without intellectual property protections, which, as this article discusses, are still science fiction.
