My flatmate checked into Kingston General Hospital tonight because he has a bleeding stomach ulcer. When I expressed shock at his condition, he said (to paraphrase) don't worry, I've had this before, worst case scenario is I spend two or three days with a tube down my throat. This event pretty much explains why I am not jealous that he went to a conference in Hawaii nor than he got two major scholarships for next year. I think it may also suggest something significant about our country's general graduate education system.
