Yesterday I was looking around a RPG store and noted that the two dominant systems were d20 (generalised D&D) and Call of Cthulhu; this got me to thinking that there is some significant reason why Star Trek, cyberpunk, and the Victorian Era are loved by many of the same fans while Star Wars, fantasy, and the Medieval Era make another troika. Then today Ticia let me know that David Brin wrote a deconstruction of the LotR saga coming to similar conclusions as his previous article on Star Wars. So clearly my observation has something going for it, if only I could pin down the underlying causes.
