Well I wanted to post some thoughts on the Oscar nominations yesterday, but felt like I needed a clever article to toss me a serve. Today Steph sent me just such an article. Now you get the priviledge of hearing what I have to say:
- This year's LOTR was significantly weaker than last years yet gets almost as many nominations despite the fact that the competition is much better this year — I think that people really like blockbusters but feel guilty unless it's based on a book.
- As Simon pointed out: Frida is a vanity piece for Salma Hayek — it looks like her investment paid off.
- I was really happy to see an unintelligable Japanese name in the list for Best Animated Feature — until I realised that it's Spirited Away which was, of course, produced by Disney. Oh well, at least it's not Shrek.
- I really like it when movies like The Cell, which have no other redeaming features, show up in the technical category — too bad the Academy decided to just copy&paste their Best Picture list.
- Now to contradict my last point: do you think The Time Machine got a Best Makeup for the Uuuber-Morlock? (Yes, I just like to say it.)
- Finally I'd like to point out that Steve Sailer's criticism of Minority Report shows that he's likely pro death penalty.
